This exhibition showcases twenty-three paintings from the BPI Collection, including works from the estate of Grace Luna, wife of Andres Luna de San Pedro y Tavera, son of Juan Luna. On exhibit from 12 June to 31 August 2008 at the Third Floor Gallery of the Ayala Museum.
Juan Luna: Selected Paintings from the Bank of the Philippine Islands Collection is curated by Professor Ambeth R. Ocampo, Chairman of the National Historical Institute, who will soon be conferred the Officier in the Order of Arts and Letters by the Republic of France. BPI shares this collection with the public for the first time on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Bank of the Philippine Islands Foundation.
Juan Luna is best known for historic and historical paintings like the Spoliarium and Blood Compact. These works are seen as expressions of the coming of the age of the Filipino and the birth of the Philippines as nation in the late 19th century. The exhibition will focus on the man behind the paintings by highlighting Luna’s overlooked works as well as studies and small works that were not intended for public display but reveal his creative process.
The show will also include portrait paintings from the Ayala Museum collection, and select works from private collections. Additional support is provided by Pacific Paint (Boysen) Philippines, Inc.
A gallery tour will be conducted by Professor Ambeth R. Ocampo on Saturday, 19 July 2008 at 11:00 am. Admission to the museum includes lecture.
