ARTIST TALK: DEAR SWEET FILTHY WORLD by PATRICIA EUSTAQUIO

ARTIST TALK: DEAR SWEET FILTHY WORLD by PATRICIA EUSTAQUIO, APR 17, SAT, 3-5PM

Patricia Eustaquio continues her exploration of memory with Dear Sweet Filthy World, bridging Elvis Costello's song of the same name with oil paintings, cardboard sculptures, and boats cut from felt and cast in epoxy resin. Through these objects, Eustaquio expresses memory as an idea, and memory as she made it.

On April 17, Saturday from 3-5pm Eustaquio elaborates on Dear Sweet Filthy World, where the construction of memory is built alongside her narrative "to convey the irony of our feeling towards reality, the realities in life, the world."

TRAVELING WITH A CAMERA | Exploring Corregidor (photo trip)

TRAVELING WITH A CAMERA SERIES: Exploring Corregidor
Pre-trip lecture: May 19 (6 p.m.-9 p.m.)
Actual photo shoot: May 22-23 (6 a.m. assembly)

Join us on our next stop for the Traveling with a Camera series: Corregidor. Its ruins have been photographed countless times, and this photography trip hopes to provide fresh perspectives in capturing these subjects. As a culminating activity, an exhibit, featuring the best photographs from the trip, will be mounted at The Alcove photo gallery of the Filipinas Heritage Library.

Located at the entrance of Manila Bay, Corregidor is a tadpole-shaped island. It is a remnant of a volcano called Corregidor Caldera. Before it became an important island fortress during the Second World War, Corregidor was a small fishing village. Today, the island is a popular tourist spot and historical site, commemorating the heroism of Filipino and American soldiers who bravely held their ground during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines.

To help each participant take arresting travel photographs, the workshop will discuss such topics as composition, design elements, lighting, and camera settings. But prior to the actual shoot, a pre-trip workshop will be conducted, covering the following topics:

 Researching the trip
 Composing the photograph for visual impact
 Producing technically correct images
 Caring for the camera while traveling
 Keeping the images for posterity sake

During the trip, participants will be shooting alongside the speaker-photographe r. Additional tips on the aesthetic and technical aspects of travel photography will be given.

Requirements
Digital camera, preferably SLR
 Basic knowledge of photography

Venue
The pre-trip lecture will be at the Filipinas Heritage Library, Makati Avenue, Ayala Triangle, Makati City (across from The Peninsula Manila). Assembly for the trip will be at the Sun Cruises ferry terminal, CCP Bay Terminal A, CCP Complex, Roxas Boulevard, Pasay City (near Harbour Square).

Speaker
Jay Alonzo loves traveling and photography. He has been teaching photography for more than 14 years and is considered as one of the country's leading photography instructors. His images have also been used in movie posters, billboards, and travel catalogues. He shares his passion for both travel and photography by teaching novice photographers.

BUNTONG HININGA by LESLIE DE CHAVEZ

For the first time in seven years, Leslie De Chavez releases his frustration and disappointment in the Philippines' history of struggle and shortcoming in the Philippines... and this time with a big and loud sigh.

Philippine socio-politics has been the keystone of De Chavez's art since 2002, and he expresses it without words or sound, but with images and colors that blare out very strong ideas and resonating emotions. This show, entitled Buntong Hininga, realizes (what he feels is) the Filipino reply to socio-political reality: the collective sigh. De Chavez describes it as "for the most time, the immediate or probably the only thing we can do" when faced with such dim situations...

ORIGEN at the Galleria Duemila

March 6 - April 25, 2010
With the year having just begun, Roberto Robles rehashes what has been left behind.
Opening in the Galleria Duemila this March 2010, Origen is an exhibition of the artist's most recent paintings and sculptures that root themselves in the artist's Felipinas show back in 2008. Ever since his first show at Duemila in 1997, Robles has continued to mount stunningly introspective exhibitions that encapsulate a universality that resonates in the viewer.

Bringing about the intimacies of history, culture and the experiential, Robles paints canvasses that echo his environment- its immediacy, its constant presence and its significance to find union between the subtle and magnanimous. Robles pushes further the concept of environment from the tangible to the intangible. His abstractions nestle themselves in powerful figurations that touch on religion and retrospection - a man's arm aside the words 'libertad de los mares' ('freedom of the seas) is a poetic portrayal of the country's past and her struggle for emancipation. History influences everything and integrates itself to the physical world that we live in. The insight of being freed from the past is an ironic one as Robles purposefully steers the focus of his works to these periods that have been somewhat forgotten.
A plaster sculpture of a man that is lacking parts to the head and shoulders is not so much a commentary on the incompleteness of man, but perhaps on how history has been so potent that it has caused part of man's identity to be anchored to a certain moment. Somehow, we are never quite complete: parts of ourselves are posited to be transcended, and this is why it is natural, if not human, to look back into the origins and states.
Origen shows Robles masterfully deviating from the clamor of postmodern conceptual art and simply cradling the silence that emanates from the past. In doing this, the artist brings universal thoughts and sentiments into a new threshold. Every stroke and every shape molded is a call to witness the luminosity of something at the point of beginning once again.

Claude Tayag's Stations of the Cross

The Stations of the Cross series by Claude Tayag will be on display at the Glass Lane, Third floor of Ayala Museum beginning March 17, 2010. In this series, the artist portrays each dramatic encounter in the Passion of Jesus Christ through single crossed wooden poles to suggest the human figure. By depicting the scenes through elemental abstractions, by using bare and faceless polished wood, Tayag offers a sublime experience to viewers. The posture and gesture of each figure capture in abstraction the essential emotions in each encounter.  Through faceless and elemental abstractions, Tayag reaches into the innermost spaces of mind and soul.

Claude Tayag is an accomplished painter, sculptor, furniture designer, a handy chef, food and travel columnist. Primarily a self-taught artist, Tayag took up architecture and economics courses at the University of the Philippines. He considers the late writer/painter Emilio "Abe" Aguilar Cruz as his greatest influence and mentor. He first entered into the Manila art scene in 1978, exhibiting watercolor paintings of Philippine folk festivals, religious images, and cordillera landscapes, works characterized by a forceful spontaneity and raw vigor. Since 1990, he has been venturing into functional and sculptural wood pieces.  Tayag's exploration with wood has allowed him to supersede the limitations of an essentially rigid material, achieving limitless volume and sensuous plasticity with his wave and curvilinear series.

Stations of the Cross will run until 16 May 2010. For details and inquiries, please call 757-7117 to 21 local 28 or email inquiries@ayalamuseum.org.

International Book Day – Book Fair
24 de abril DÍA del LIBRO at INSTITUTO CERVANTES

Fecha Date: April 24, 2010
Hora Time: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Lugar Venue: Instituto Cervantes

As celebrated yearly, Instituto Cervantes de Manila, in collaboration with various bookstores and other institutions, will offer a Book Market during the Open House and Book Party on the 24th of April. From 10 am to 6pm, bibliophiles can get their hands on a wide selection of books: children and young adult titles, dictionaries, novels, and non-fiction titles, at the Día del Libro book fair. Available at even madder prices, brand new books go for as low as Php20.00. And to make the deal even sweeter, Instituto Cervantes gives a red rose with every purchase. Also, get a chance to mingle with your favourite authors as they grace this event, signing copies of their latest works. And to cap the day, a Book Party with a live band will entertain you until midnight. You may get updates on the event by visiting and becoming a fan of our Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/diadellibro/. You may also obtain more info and updates on the Instituto Cervantes’ cultural events by following its blog in http://culturaenmanila.blogspot.com/.
